Invisible Maps

We map geographies to construct a mnemonic by which we might retrace our steps and anticipate our passage through time. Creating an expectation of experience we prepare for the future based upon the dialectical past.

Moments from a day, decoupage of days past, Invisible Maps describes a topography of experience, the ebb and flow of residue recorded in the granular sands of place–a sense of being there, beyond time and self.

Invisible Maps is a residential property in the Hawaii town of Papaikou. It was the house next door, vacant upon my arrival, nature consuming imprints of nurture. Residues of past function haunted the habitat–abandoned photographs, rusting appliances, decaying furniture–all recalling occupancy, tracings begging the question of events-not-in-evidence. Pollen levitated through seeping sunshine in the trash-filled yard, memoir of footprints of habitation and abandonment–mosquitoes the extant masters of this small universe.

In this world of ubiquitous information, the subject of Invisible Maps is that which you cannot Google. Historically the property of cartographers, the notion of “map” is appropriated to a pilgrimage across human perception, past and present. Images extricate a pixelation of personal history in documentary portrait at the intersection of time and place.
