Monk's Cell  (Poland)

The cell is the only private space that is afforded to the monk. Usually it consists of one room, and it is within these four walls that he has his workspace, sleeping room, and living room. A monk’s aim in life is not to aspire to the home, or even have the need to imagine one. Neither is the home the fulfilment of his basic wants. His home is the consequence of a spiritual decision. The cell in the monastery is assigned to the monk, and how it looks from the inside entirely depends on its occupier, reflecting both his character and also position in the monastery’s hierarchy and the order itself.
